February 2020 platform changes: What you need to know

Here’s your monthly list of changes, feature releases, and updates that social media producers, editors and managers should know. Note that this list does not include beta tests or rumors, only publicly available features and updates. (Thus, beta features in the works such as the rumored Twitter misinformation labels will not be included until they are adopted widely.)

Facebook

  • Facebook introduced an “Off-Facebook Activity” menu where users can 1) view a summary of the information other apps and websites have sent Facebook; 2) disconnect this information from their account; and 3) disconnect future off-Facebook activity from their account (this holds for all off-Facebook activity or only specific apps or websites).
  • Facebook’s Creator Studio is rolling out new video metrics called Traffic Source Insights within the Retention Insights surface. Admins will be able to see how much watch time videos are generating from each source: Followers, Shares, Recommendations, and Paid.
  • Creator Studio has added Bulk Uploader, a new feature that enables users to upload multiple videos simultaneously, edit title and other metadata all in a single screen and schedule them to publish at the desired time.
  • Facebook is rolling out a Creator Studio mobile app that is iOS and Android compatible. Users can use the app to view Facebook Page metrics for different day periods and schedule, publish and make changes to posts.

Instagram

  • You can now reply to your friends’ stories using using GIFs.
  • Two new categories in the “Following” tab allow users to see which accounts they’ve interacted with recently, and which have shown up most frequently.

Snapchat

  • Updates to Snapchat AR tech include new logo identification and ground transformation features.

TikTok

  • A new family safe mode links a parent’s TikTok account to their teen’s. Once enabled, parents and guardians can access to how long their teen can spend on TikTok each day, control over who sends their teen direct messages and the ability to restrict the appearance of inappropriate content.
  • You can now add direct website links to your TikTok account page bio.

Twitter

Other

  • February brought another free tool for social video subtitling: “Subly” is a video creation platform which automatically transcribes short videos.
