SOCIAL MEDIA CELEBRATES #APOLLO11

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, media organizations creatively leveraged social media celebrate the groundbreaking moment in history. Here are a few examples that I spotted in the last week:

1. CBS replayed their 1969 coverage in real time on YouTube.

2. JFK Library partnered with Digitas to release the JFK Moonshot app, an augmented reality experience that followed the Apollo 11 mission from launch to the returning splashdown. The library streamed the entire five-day mission on Twitch, tapping into popular Twitch streamers such as Banzaibaby.
3. Air & Space Museum launched a standalone Twitter account @ReLiveApollo11, telling the story of the mission in real time using hashtag #Apollo11.

PBS’ SUMMER OF SPACE

PBS is running space-themed programming all summer long, which you can explore under the unified hashtag #SummerOfSpacePBS. PBS has been asking fans for their “Summer of Space” stories, with different calls to action. You can see some of the responses collected from social media here.
1. American Experience broadcast the first episode of their groundbreaking series “Chasing the Moon” on Facebook in parallel to the PBS broadcast and PBS app. The stories documented in the series are fleshed out in dozens of social-first assets, such as captivating character videos, exclusive clips and dynamic graphics.
2. NOVA is releasing informative posts related to their space programming (which continues through August) such as this “How did the Moon come to be?” video and gorgeous images on Instagram. I am also loving their “wallpaper Wednesdays” feature on Instagram Stories.

3. High School Quiz Show teamed up with NOVA to release space-themed interactive Story quizzes every Wednesday this month. High schoolers can test their space trivia knowledge using NOVA content, as each quiz relates to the NOVA film airing that evening on PBS. You can look back at the previously released quizzes—which covered Neil Armstrong, black holes, and the Moon—on HSQS’s Instagram and Facebook pages.

4. WGBH has amped up its social media game for the Summer of Space as well, from space-themed profile filters for Facebook fans to a social-exclusive “Chasing the Moon” behind the scenes event from our studio at the Boston Public Library.
5. ReLive It. WGBH launched a new Instagram channel in time for the historic moon walk: throughout the day on July 20, @ReLiveIt captured what it was like for ordinary Americans watching the moon landing, through the eyes of a local science photographer.
What did I miss from this roundup? Reply to this email with more social media sightings and I’ll include in future newsletters as the “Summer of Space” continues!

Case Study: NASA’s Immense Social Presence

NASA’s social media operations encompass more than 537 accounts, producing a constant stream of compelling content detailing the tremendously diverse workload carried out by the agency. TLDR from The Drum’s deep dive into NASA’s social content strategy:
  • NASA uses social media to communicate information about its activities directly to Americans, without relying on press coverage
  • Social listening has helped inform how NASA communicates overall
  • Feed posts (FB, TW, IG) publicize information, events, and milestones; Stories content gives a behind-the-scenes look at what’s going on
  • They wish they had jumped on Snapchat earlier than they did
  • Video is their priority when it comes to storytelling; experimentation with video storytelling is the #1 focus right now
  • NASA relies on experts and astronauts as the best way to connect directly and personally to Americans
